Alliance

The arrival of European imperialism and settlement on Long Island in the mid-1600s unleashed theft of Indigenous lands and a brutal system of enslavement for African and Indigenous people. This also began an alliance that developed through shared experiences; the establishment of mixed communities such as Bethel-Christian Avenue-Laurel Hill, Eastville, Freetown, and Success; and relatedness that continue today. We include Faye Lone’s (Towanda Seneca) quilt “Journey: The Red and Black experience in the ‘New World’” as a commemoration of the histories of Black and Indigenous peoples on Long Island, and a testimony to the on-going accomplishments of Black and Indigenous people in literature, art, science, and politics.
