"Journey: The Black and Red Experience in the 'New' World"

Description

Artist Statement:
"This piece has a dual timeline for the stories of these two peoples brought together by invading peoples. The shape of the piece has the west coast of Africa and the east coast of the U.S. The binding is made of a fabric to depict the ocean that separated us. The blue thread tells the story of the African peoples: The slave trade buiding on the west coast to the White House on the east coast. The slave in chains, his one hand up, facing the past, to Obama taking the oath of office, his one hand up, facing the future. The blood red whip marks of slavery to the white jet trails of the fly over at the inauguration. Slaves picking cotton. The defining moments of Rosa Parks and the Million Man March. Martin Luther Kind Jr., his portrait in Africa, speaking a future into the new world, "I have a dream" The red thread tells the story of Native Peoples since colonization: The noose for the battles and deaths suffered by people defending their homeland. Geronimo for the leadership we needed and the bravery against deceit and brutality. The boarding schools with the cemeteries of our stolen children. The reservations, a tiny piece of our lands, with hopelessness and alcoholism. The American Indian Movement began in the 1960s, a new voice emerged. Our people started graduating college, just one of the new initiatives to bring economic and cultural successes to our homelands. Our "dream" alongside Dr. King's words, is to have a seat in the United Nations, a dream supported by over 100 other countries."
